"Hey Coach, look at that butterfly!"
- Blog keywords:
All young athletes (especially males) are forced to manage their attention in order to learn the skill, drill, activity, etc. they must execute during the contest. This is primarily due to them being under the influence of one of the most dangerous drugs known to the human race...TESTERONE! In my experience, I have seen the effects of testerone drive the most promising athletes to chase passing butterflies, dig monstrous craters in the center of the practice field, and or scream to the top of their lungs all for no "apparent" reason. The actual reason this happens is that testerone is an intense energy source that compels its subjects to act. In the case of the young athlete, the straying actions represent an energy leak that occurs when they are not fully engaged in the drill. The challenge is how to contain and channel the energy so the athlete uses it in a constructive way.
At Quantum LEAP Sports, all of our activity channels (Camps, Clinics, & Afterschool Enrichments) are organized to minimize leaks as much as possible, testerone influence notwithstanding. We structure our drills and our activity stations so that the LEAPers have little time to be distracted. By ensuring they "keep it moving" we are able to retain their attention to the task at hand. This, in turn, gives our coaching staff ample opportunity to "Assess" the LEAPer's ability to "Execute" the drill. During the assessment the coach makes the necessary physical and mental corrections to help improve the LEAPer's understanding of the drill and how to execute it properly. To further reduce these energy leaks, we insist each LEAPer pay close attention to their fellow LEAPer(s) while they are in execution mode. This further reduces the distraction element and helps the observing leaper improve their own ability to perform the same task when it's their turn.
This ability to focus on the field has a carryover effect to other parts of the LEAPer's lives. Parents tell us that athletes who experience the Quantum LEAP Sports environment show an improvement in their school work and their overall behavior. Over time, as these young athletes mature, their ability to focus, to ignore distractions from opposing fans, to disregard the pressure of the situation, and to turn a deaf ear to trash-talking opponents will give them the chance to succeed against whatever odds no matter what the circumstance. Why? Because they learned it at Quantum LEAP Sports. For more information on Quantum LEAP Sports, Contact Coach Q.
