The Importance of Fundamentals

With the way technology dominates our lives today, a lot of kids rely on video games or television to learn a sport. The problem this creates is these would-be student-athletes start to believe that what they see on the screen is the correct way to perform the act. Over time, these actions become engrained in their behavior and consequently they develop bad-habits and worse practice these habits thinking they are doing things right. Once they reach middle-school or high school, coaches have to spend lots of time “un-teaching” the bad habits that have become so hard to break. This can lead to frustration because the new movements feel uncomfortable and often difficult to grasp at first. This leads to delayed team growth and a slower development in the overall team’s ability to execute.
At Quantum LEAP Sports, we place a heavy emphasis on the student-athlete developing the fundamentals in their chosen sport. Once our coaching consultants are confident the child as a good grasp of what is required to execute the drill, exercise, etc. We then provide high numbers of repetitions so the activity literally becomes second nature. Scientific evidence has shown that conducting lots and lots of repetitions of a given activity creates neural pathways in the brain and establishes muscle memory for performing the act. The importance in this case is that the student-athlete can then act naturally on the field of play and respond according to how they have practiced…with poise and confidence. Our LEAP methodology (Learn, Execute, Assess, Practice) has proven to be effective at creating that same poise and confidence when performing on the field of play. Further, we provide individual assessments of all LEAPers’ strengths and areas for improvement. This establishes a solid point of reference for them to use as they progress and for us to track their growth and development.
